Introducing Your New Pom to The Family
Pomeranians are beautiful, intelligent and highly social dogs that loves meeting new people and animals. When you bring your companion home, he or she will likely be very eager to get to know the members of his new pack. Here are some tips on how to introduce him to everyone in a way that is safe and enjoyable for all involved.
1. Other Dogs
First, never leave your new pom alone with your other dogs, as a serious fight could occur. Make sure that you’ve established yourself as the pack leader among your established dogs, so that they know to obey you. Walk up to the others while holding your pom and gauge their reaction. If they don’t respond aggressively, allow them to sniff one another, but keep a grip on your pom, just in case.
2. Children
Pomeranians are not recommended as pets if you have small children in the house, because poms don’t put up with much harassment like that often dished out by very young children. Poms are usually fine for kids older than 5, though. Have your child sit down on the ground and allow the dog to approach them.
3. Cats
Cats and dogs usually don’t get along, but in some cases they will. Show your new pom to your cat, and watch the reaction carefully. If they seem curious about one another, a closer meeting may be in order.
